Day 15

July 27, 2012

Today I ran a code to fit a gaussian to an absorption line in the continuum of NGC1386. I also finally AND correctly fixed the orientation of the acquisition image, after a week of trying.

In far more exciting news, I am awesome at team-building volleyball.

Day 14

July 26, 2012

I suppose that technically I'm lucky... I mean, I get to experience the problems of an astronomer first hand... many years before most people do. APPARENTLY I was wrong about actually fixing the orientation of the image yesterday, I just wrote out the image with the wrong header file, so it LOOKED like it was right. So after a LOT of help from Dmitry I finally understood what I was supposed to be doing. Then I got some more help from Dr. Richardson. He showed me a package of programs that I could use to rotate the image, so that it's rotated like it should be. of course, this was after I downloaded a huge package for one program that turned out to be the wrong one. Naturally.

Day 13

July 25, 2012

Today I finished the code to flip and fix the orientation of the acquisition image. I also FAILED at the current intern challenge for this week, but had a ridiculous amount of fun doing it. My partner this week is Brennan, and let's just say, it's a good thing he can (sort of, and slowly) read Greek... it was cool getting to know him, and hilarious to listen to him reading (jk, Brennan you're awesome), as Tyler sat there and giggled like a 2 year old. All in all, a pretty good day. Except for Tyler's giggles. Those were creepy.

Day 12

July 24, 2012

Today I FINALLY fixed the header file of the acquisition image in IDL after many, many, MANY attempts at doing it, several different ways after several hours of research. Now, if I could just figure out how all these other thingies work....

Day 11

July 23, 2012

Today was the last day I'm going to see my boss in person for THREE WEEKS. I'm still going to be in contact with him (e-mail, skype etc), but it's going to be interesting! He showed me two new programs that I can use in IDL to fit Gaussian functions to emission/absorption lines in the spectrum of our galaxy(NGC1386). I also have to finish altering the header file of the acquisition image in IDL. Fun things for me to do (alone) tomorrow!

Day 10

July 20, 2012

Today I brought a friend into work with me for the first annual Bring a Friend to Work Day. It was pretty fun! We got to see a 3-D scanner the freshman CIS students from last year made- which was awesome. I also fixed my research diary and inverted an image using IDL. It was a pretty fun day!
