August 21, 2012

Today I calculated the number of ionizing photons emitted from the galaxy NGC1386.

Day 31

August 20, 2012

I can't believe that it's already the last week of the internship!! It seems like I just started yesterday...

Anyway, today I started on the last project that I've been assigned- calculating the number of ionizing photons emitted from the AGN of our lovely galaxy, NGC1386. So far its not really going all that well.  Probably because I haven't done any math in 2 months, and this is all math.

Day 28

August 15, 2012

I went to Chipotle for lunch today with Maddie, Olivia, Cassie, Kaila and Bethany, and it was DELICIOUS. I ate the most enormous burrito I have ever seen. All of the interns who helped Bethany yesterday with the kids got free lunch. It was pretty fun!!

I also finally got the code I have been working on to work, with the help of Davide, who is finally back. It only took three weeks....

Dr. Robinson also helped me with my presentation. He gave me some slides to look at, to help me get an idea of what I should focus on. He also gave me some pictures I can use in my presentation, which was really REALLY helpful.

Day 27

August 14, 2012

Today I worked on the powerpoint. Even more. I changed some slides to make sure that I wouldn't go over my time limit. I also went to Journal Club- still didn't really understand most of it, but I didn't really expect to so that's ok. I also talked to Dr. Robinson about my presentation and he's going to help me get a more solid idea of what background I'll need to give for the presentation. He also offered to check over my slides. Dmitry also offered his help, so I'll do a couple run throughs next week, after I get it into some sort of first draft.

Day 25

August 10, 2012

I went to a couple of the undergraduate talks today, including Trent's. It was interesting to see what other research was going on. I didn't understand all of it, or even most of it, but I still think that I got the gist- LOTS of research is happening. I also think that I definitely want to major in astronomy/astrophysics for sure now.  In other news, I can't figure out why the radio contours aren't actually being plotted on the acquisition image, which is the main goal of my program, but I think I'll be able to figure it out on Monday.

Day 24

August 9, 2012

Today I figured out why there was no output from my program, finally. I missed a chunk of code that was supposed to be used. And then I figured out how to use it. I think that it looks pretty good if I do say so myself!

This is NGC1386. The image was taken at
3600 nm.

Day 23

August 8, 2012

Today I worked a LOT on the code that I have been looking at, the stuff that Davide sent me. Turns out, I (once again) didn't do anything right! I got some help from Trent, but I still have a lot to fix. I left out a portion of code that actually plots the acquisition image... not  good, as that was half of my assignment. Oh, well. Lots more to do tomorrow!

OH, and Kaila and I are almost done with the weekly intern challenge. Just putting that out there.
